SSL & Digital Certificates

What is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is an encryption technology that creates an encrypted connection between your web server and your visitor’s web browser so that confidential information can be transferred.

When using SSL, as the data is transmitted from the client’s browser to the web server, all information on the form is encrypted. Once it is received at the web server it is automatically decrypted, and you can then store it or process it as usual on the web server.

Note:  SSL does not include software to process credit card transactions. Although you can securely receive credit card information through SSL, actual processing of the credit card will require a ‘Merchant Account’ from an accredited financial institution.

What is an SSL Certificate?

To enable SSL on your website, you will need an SSL Certificate that identifies you, and install it on the server.

Your secure site is then accessed via https:// rather than http://, and indicated by a padlock icon in web browsers or a green address bar.

Digital certificates are issued directly by a trusted certificate issuing authority (eg. Thawte, Verisign).

Websites using a Secure Certificate issued by HOTarabica have all the advantages of secure encryption, but as HOTarabica is not a Certification Authority, the SSL encryption is not accepted by web browser software by default. All data will be encrypted, but visitors will see an error message.

HOTarabica offers the following options:

SSL Encryption

We provide you with the freedom to order your own encryption certificate from a Certificate Authority of your choice. While a dedicated IP address was previously required, SSL now makes use of the server IP address.

THAWTE 123 SSL Certificate

SSL123 is THAWTE’s entry level certificate which provides validation that your domain is registered and that you have authorised the purchase of the certificate. Through SSL encryption, the certificate assures that information is kept private between your web server and your client’s web browsers.

Certificate Features and Benefits:

  • Encryption: Up to 256-bit encryption enabled
  • Browser Compatibility: Highest in industry
  • Certificate Details: Domain name only

THAWTE Web Server Certificate

The THAWTE SSL Web Server Certificate offers comprehensive authentication procedures (domain name and identity verification). It also offers 256, 128, 56 or 40-bit encryption depending on your client’s browser capability. This ensures that information is kept private while in transit between your web server and your clients’ web browsers.
